In a significant development, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has given a major update on key middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who is doubtful for the ODI World Cup due to a back injury. Notably, Iyer missed the IPL 2023 due to the injury and hasn't played competitive cricket, focusing on his rehab at the NCA since then.

As Iyer's availability remains a puzzle for India and their fans, captain Rohit Sharma has come up with an update that could boost the team's morale. Sharma, currently in the United States for an event, revealed that Iyer is recovering quickly, expecting the stylish batter from Mumbai to regain full fitness before the World Cup.

'Iyer is on track in terms of his fitness'- Rohit Sharma

“I know there is a lot of talk on the guys injured (Iyer and KL Rahul) and are in Benglauru getting treated. Honestly, I am got going to reveal who is going to be batting at no.4, 5 and 6 now. I will but not now. But talking about Iyer, I think he is on track in terms of his fitness. I am keeping my fingers crossed."

“I don’t want anybody to be injured or anyone to stay injured during the World Cup. I want all the resources that is available to us."

After Yuvraj Singh retired, India searched for an able candidate to fill up his giant shoes before Iyer showed promising signs and locked his place in the ODIs. In 38 ODI innings, the gutsy batter has amassed 1631 runs at an average of 46.60 and a strike rate of 96.51. Given India's recent batting collapses in his absence, Iyer could strengthen the vulnerable middle order in the showpiece event.
