On November 22, India will lock horns against Australia at the WACA stadium in Perth in the first of five-match Test series. Ahead of the series opener, eyes are on Nathan McSweeney, who is likely to make his Australia debut against India and open the innings with Usman Khawaja.
It is worth noting that Mcsweeney has no experience as an opener in first-class cricket and only took up that role for Australia A recently and shone with the bat. Thus, former Australia opener David Warner has heaped massive praise on the 25-year-old and also touted him to become the leading run-getter in the upcoming BGT.
"I think he's got the technique, he's got the patience to partner up with Uzzy (Khawaja) to allow himself to score big. I’ve pencilled him in to be the highest run scorer this year, so I'm looking forward to that. I think they've both got the same sort of patience, which is going to be good for them and hold the middle order in good stead," said Warner.
Khawaja Backs Mcsweeney To Shine
Not just Warner, but Usman Khawaja has also backed McSweeney to shine against India. He said:
"There's no guarantees in cricket...but he doesn't have to do anything different.Just repeat the process. He's been able to handle the pressure at Shield level. When you look at his demeanour, the way he plays, you do kind of feel over a longer period of time he'll be able to handle the scrutiny, the pressure of Test cricket,” reckoned the seasoned campaigner.
It is almost certain that McSweeney will open the innings as even Australia captain Pat Cummins too had hinted at this in one of the pressers.
