The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction took place on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) grabbed attention by picking up veteran Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane for his base price of ₹1.5 crore. Rahane, who previously played for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in recent seasons, is back in KKR colors.
With Shreyas Iyer no longer part of the team, KKR is yet to announce its captain for the upcoming season. After the auction, KKR CEO Venky Mysore addressed the possibility of Rahane taking on the captaincy.
Will Ajinkya Rahane Lead KKR?
Speaking to broadcasters, Mysore said the team’s management needs to carefully consider their options before making a decision.
“Well, you know that. To be honest, we have to sit down and take stock. Sometimes what happens is, after you've done all of these things, you just have to sit down, reflect, look at the whole thing. There are stakeholders and parts of the think tank won't be here. So we'll all sit down and have a proper chat about that, and I'm sure a proper decision will be made,” Mysore told the broadcasters.
Rahane has prior experience with KKR, having played seven matches for them in 2022, where he scored 133 runs with a top score of 44. Across his IPL career, Rahane has featured in 185 matches, amassing 4,642 runs, including two centuries and 30 fifties, with a personal best of 105*.
Mysore Delighted With KKR's Arsenal
Venky Mysore expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance at the auction. KKR made headlines by splashing a massive ₹23.75 crore to retain Venkatesh Iyer after a bidding war with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
“I am very, very happy. I think auctions are always up and down and nerve wracking. But I think the whole team did an amazing job of sticking to the plan. That's the trick, I always feel. But in the end, the way we completed the squad and checked all the boxes that we wanted to, I am extremely happy,” Mysore added.
KKR didn’t stop with Venkatesh Iyer. They strengthened their squad by acquiring key players like Spencer Johnson, Anrich Nortje, Umran Malik, and Vaibhav Arora. Among foreign players, they brought in Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Quinton de Kock, Rovman Powell, and Moeen Ali.
With these signings, KKR wrapped up the auction with a 21-member squad and a remaining purse of 0.05 crore after burning 50.95 crore.
