England's spin-bowling all-rounder, Moeen Ali, feels his team was positioned for victory following a fascinating second day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Moeen Ali confident in England's chances to win

Opening up on the proceedings, the seasoned player expressed confidence in England's ability to hunt any target set by Australia, especially considering the ideal batting conditions on offer.

The English side had Australia in a pickle at 116-4 after conceding a narrow 26-run lead in the first innings, having been bowled out for 237. However, an excellent performance with the ball saw the likes of David Warner and Steve Smith being sent back to the pavilion quickly.

While speaking to BBC Test Match Special, Moeen expressed optimism about their chances, noting that the day ended on a positive note and they still have a good opportunity to win. He added that they will need to chase whatever score England sets.

According to the seasoned campaigner, the pitch is still favourable to bat and with talented players on their team and a fast outfield, they have a serious chance. Regarding the target, Moeen mentioned that, ideally, they would like to chase around 260.

"We have a good chance. It's pleasing the day actually ended up quite nicely and we're still in a winnable position. Whatever they get we are going to have to try and chase. It's still a decent wicket. We've got some brilliant players, the outfield is rapid and it takes a couple of guys to get in. I don't know about the score - from this position we'd ideally like to chase 260,” said Moeen.

Meanwhile, after sitting out the Lord's Test, the all-rounder from Warwickshire was back in action, bagging the crucial wickets of Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the second innings, thus stalling Australia's progress. In the process, he joined the ranks of only three English spinners to claim 200 Test wickets.

As the day ended, Australia's lead had grown to 142, with Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head batting, hoping to stretch their side's advantage.
