'What I Really Liked..'- Gavaskar Hails Rohit's Blistering Knock In Bangalore T20I

Rohan Gavaskar lauded Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for achieving a great leadership feat in the nation's T20I history and reinforced why he loved the elegant opener's century in the third and final match of the Afghanistan series in Bangalore on Wednesday (January 17).

The former player noted how India were desperate for their captain to lead from the front after being reduced to 22 for four on a sticky surface at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, fearing they could in for a maiden loss against the spirited Afghans.

Rohit then stood tall on the occasion and produced a memorable hundred. After a slow start when the track thwarted his intent and strokes, Rohit finally earned his rewards for being grave. He hammered an unbeaten 121 off 69 deliveries as India ultimately won the thrilling double Super Over clash.

Gavaskar Hails Rohit's Ton And Captaincy

With the victory, Rohit equalled MS Dhoni as the joint most successful Indian T20I captain in the format's history, taking his winning tally to 41 wins. Rohit, however, has a higher win/loss rate of 3.416, having earlier surpassed Virat Kohli's 30 wins as Indian T20I skipper.

"This is the format where your captaincy skills are really tested. If he has a higher winning percentage than MS and Virat, that tells you what a good captain he is," Gavaskar told Cricbuzz.

"What I really liked about this innings is that, generally you say in a T20I game now - the template is to go bang bang bang from the word go. And that is the template that is set. But both Rohit and Rinku used their cricketing intelligence at 22-4 and said no. We can get runs later on but let's just give ourselves a little bit of time," he added.

Rohit managed to silence his critics, who had questioned his spot in the Indian team after his successive ducks in the first two matches upon a much-debated T20I comeback. The great limited-overs batter will now shift his focus to the Test matches against England as India resume their World Test Championship (WTC) campaign.
