India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy credited Gautam Gambhir for playing a key role in his return to the national side. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) star revealed that Gambhir, who is now India’s head coach, stood by him during the most difficult phases of his career.

Chakaravarthy, who made his India debut in 2021, struggled to cement his place after the Men in Blue’s disappointing campaign in the T20 World Cup in UAE.

Chakaravarthy Credits Mentor For Comeback

Dropped from the squad, he had to fight his way back to earn another chance. Speaking to RevSportz's journalist Boria Majumdar, the wrist-spinner acknowledged Gambhir’s unwavering support.

"Gauti Bhai also has helped me a lot in my comeback, the way he motivates me. Even if we talk little, he has always given me good confidence and he’s always told that ‘no matter who’s going to ignore you, I will keep you in my plans for now’. So, that kind of gave me confidence. And if you ask about Gauti Bhai as a mentor, then I would say he brings in a warrior mindset in the dressing room, which is very important and has worked for us at KKR and in the Champion Trophy," Chakaravarthy told RevSportz.

Varun Chakaravarthy pointed out that his connection with Gambhir dates back to their KKR days, where the mentor’s influence shaped his mindset.

Varun Speaks On Asia Cup And World Cup Prep

Meanwhile, also expressed confidence in his Asia Cup 2025 chances, with the squad set to be announced on August 19.

"Yeah, the Asia Cup is coming up, and for the white-ball players, they have got a good break after the IPL. I did play TNPL (Tamil Nadu Premier League), but still I’ve got a one-month break right now. It has been a good time to work on my strength and conditioning, fitness, my bowling, my batting, and everything. I got time to rejuvenate my entire self in a holistic way. Feeling better because I got a lot of time to spend with my kid, my wife, my parents. Yes, I think, I have put in the hard yards. Now, the rest is up to the bigger force," Varun added.

Looking ahead, the spinner stressed that while the World Cup remains a long-term goal, his immediate focus is on delivering consistent performances in the upcoming white-ball tours, which he believes will help him approach the global event with greater confidence and clarity.
