Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has voiced his support for Indian tourism amidst the recent diplomatic row with the Maldives. Shami, known for his fiery pace on the cricket field, encouraged fellow citizens to explore the beauty of Indian beaches, emphasising the importance of promoting tourism for the country's overall development.

Speaking to ANI, Shami expressed his stance on the matter, stating,

"We should promote our tourism. It benefits all parties, regardless of the direction the nation takes.PM is working to advance our nation, so we ought to back it as well."

The cricket player's appeal to back PM Narendra Modi's initiatives is in line with the current controversy that was started by disparaging comments made by Maldivian officials after PM Modi visited the union territory of Lakshadweep.

The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) strongly condemned the disparaging comments made by Maldivian leaders against PM Modi and the Indian people. Highlighting India as one of the closest allies and neighbours, MATI acknowledged India's consistent support during various crises in the island nation's history.

The controversy unfolded when Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, made mocking references to PM Modi in response to his Lakshadweep visit.

However, in response, Indian cricketers, including Hardik Pandya, and Bollywood celebrities such as Salman Khan and John Abraham, rallied to support Indian tourism, encouraging citizens to explore the scenic beauty of Indian beaches, endorsing PM Modi's call for boosting beach tourism in Lakshadweep.

Amidst the diplomatic tension, Mohammed Shami and several other athletes criticised the perceived 'racist' remarks against India and urged citizens to explore the stunning Indian beaches.

Notably, Shami was recently honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award, recognising his outstanding contribution to the sport. This accolade adds another feather to Shami's cap, acknowledging his dedication and skill on the cricket field.

Shifting focus to the cricketing world, Shami is gearing up for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, scheduled to kick off on January 25. The series will commence with the first Test in Hyderabad and conclude with the fifth and final Test in Dharamshala on March 11.

When asked about his preparations for the series, Shami stated that he isn't contemplating adopting new techniques. He emphasised the importance of maintaining fitness and a positive mindset in home conditions. Shami noted the evolution of India's cricketing reputation, saying,

"Earlier people used to think that India is a batting-dominating team, but now after 4 to 6 months, Now that everyone knows, India is a bowling team as well".

As the anticipation builds for the upcoming Test series, cricket fans await the squad announcement from India, while England's selection panel has already named a 16-player squad, featuring four spinners and three uncapped players.
