'Doesn't Even Get Selected For India A', Ex-Opener Surprised At Umran Malik's Disappearance

Umran Malik's dwindling stocks and overall decline in Indian cricket's hierarchy got former India batter Aakash Chopra wondering about the selection policy in place for the Jammu and Kashmir pacer, who doesn't even get selected for India A anymore.

Malik hasn't played for India since the ODI series in the Caribbean last August after being fast-tracked to the highest level purely on promise and potential as a raw speedster, capable of clocking 145-150 kmph at will.

The lack of control and consistency, however, plagued the bowler's wings at the international stage in his brief stay, and he has since been forced back to the domestic colours after a premature rise to the top-level reckoning.

Chopra Asks Where Is Umran Malik?

Umran, who has played 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is for India with expensive economy rates of 6.54 and 10.49, respectively, wasn't selected in the build-up to the ICC World Cup 2023 and also fell off the radar in T20Is ahead of the T20 World Cup in June.

The 24-year-old wasn't picked for India A's home series against England Lions either, which only reinforced the mood in the set-up and the direction the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is taking for the J&K quick.

"Till some time back, Umran Malik was everywhere. We took him to the West Indies as well and it seemed like he could be in the World Cup team too but now he is not there in any of the teams. He doesn't even get selected for India A," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

"What happened within three months that a guy first gets selected for the Indian team, gets very minimum chances there, and then goes totally missing? We don't even know where Umran Malik is. Why isn't he there? We should know why this is happening," he added.
