The Indian team is all set to take on Australia in the five-match T20I series, starting from October 29 in Canberra. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side and will be looking to win another series as T20I captain.
However, SKY's form in T20Is has been pretty poor in 2025. He could muster just 72 runs six innings of India's Asia Cup campaign and had a poor series against England too. Thus, he is under pressure to score runs and lead from the front as a leader as another poor series with the bat could be detrimental to his stature as a captain.
Gambhir dismisses concerns over SKY's form
However, the head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has put his weight behind the captain before the series. Gambhir mentioned that Suryakumar Yadav's form doesn't concern him as they have committed to an ultra-aggressive approach in the shortest format. He added that this fearless approach would come with failures, but it is not an issue as long as a player is showing intent.
“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable,” said Gambhir in an interview with JioHotstar.

Gambhir also mentioned that SKY can easily avoid criticism by scoring 40 off 30 balls, but added that they have decided that it is okay to fail while going for an aggressive approach. Thus, it shows that Gambhir and the team management want Suryakumar Yadav to continue his aggressive batting approach and not take a cautious route despite failures in recent times.
“It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach."
Gambhir expressed confidence in SKY taking more responsibility with the bat once he finds his form. He also applauded the leadership style of Suryakumar Yadav and is confident that his team will do well on the Australian shores.
