Glenn Maxwell tonked 106 runs from just 44 balls against the Netherlands as Australia steamrolled their way to their third successive win at the 2023 World Cup. The star all-rounder was fittingly adjudged as 'Player of the Match' for his efforts, pipping out fellow centurion David Warner and spin wizard Adam Zampa despite the latter's four-fer.

After the match, Maxwell acknowledged Australia's near-perfect game at Delhi and issued a stern World Cup 2023 warning for all competing nations.

Glenn Maxwell reveals approach for record ton

Glenn Maxwell turbo-charged Australia's total from 266-4 to 399-8 despite arriving at the crease in the 40th over of the innings. In a sequence of 63 deliveries between the time of his arrival and his departure, Maxwell ended up facing 44 of them to belt 106 scintillating runs.

Blazing through the Netherlands bowling attack with his barbaric assault in Delhi, the Australian veteran is now the recipient of the fastest-century record in a World Cup game. During the post-match presentation ceremony, the right-hander spoke about his pre-innings approach and his intent during the earlier stage of his innings. He said:

“The record is something I didn't set out to do. I tried to stay till the end and cash on the opportunity to bat here as the boundaries are short and the ball runs away quickly under lights. It's about making the right decisions at the start of my innings. I was not giving myself time to settle in. That's the change I have made.”

The swashbuckling batter also acknowledged Australia's sheer dominance as their 309-run difference over the Dutch turned out to be the biggest win margin for any side in World Cup history. The 2015 World Cup alumnus further stated that with three successive wins, Australia's campaign is truly back on track.

“A near to perfect game. To post 400 on the board and then bowling the way we did was perfect. That's three wins in a row and we are on track now," he added.

Maxwell, along with the rest of his Australian teammates, will be aiming to sustain their winning run when they take on Antipodean rivals New Zealand on October 28. The much-awaited contest will be played out at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
