At the end of 2023, there were two heartbreaks that the Indian cricket fans had to undergo, one was the loss of World Cup 2023 and the other was the removal of five-time IPL winning captain, Rohit Sharma from his skipper post by Mumbai Indians (MI).

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag weighed in on the contentious issue, questioning the rationale behind removing a captain who had led the team to multiple titles.

Earlier, MI sent shockwaves through the cricketing world with the surprising announcement of Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy reins from the legendary Sharma.

The decision, unveiled just before the commencement of the IPL 2024 season, sparked widespread criticism from disheartened fans.  The pressure intensified when MI suffered an unexpected defeat in their three consecutive games under Pandya's leadership. Criticism poured in from all quarters.

Virender Sehwag Confirms MI Removed Rohit Sharma Without His Knowledge

"When a captain leads you to victory, how can you ignore him? Which franchise lets go of a captain who has secured five titles?" Sehwag pondered during an interview on Cricbuzz.

Highlighting a fundamental flaw in franchise dynamics, Sehwag expressed dismay over MI's lack of communication with players regarding the captaincy shift. "

"This is the biggest drawback of any franchise, when they don’t tell players… the biggest example of this is what MI did with Rohit, unhe bhi nahi pata tha ki wo captaincy se hatt rahe hai, and that is a very harsh decision," Sehwag lamented, labeling the decision as unduly harsh.
