Candice Warner, wife of legendary Australian opening batter David Warner, has opened up about her dark past and a close brush with suicide. A retired professional ironwoman herself, Candice recently talked about the abuse she suffered after her tryst with then New Zealand rugby player Sonny Bill Williams.
A photograph of the two hooking up with each other from back in 2007 sparked a wave a ridicule and “slut-shaming”, as admitted by Candice herself. It is worth noting that the controversy unfolded long before she met and married David Warner in 2015.
Candice Warner tells all in emotive podcast
While speaking on the ‘Mental As Anyone’ podcast earlier, Candice Warner admitted that she contemplated suicide many times when she was caught photographed while hooking up with Sonny Bill Williams back in 2007.
She said:
“I definitely contemplated suicide many times. I remember driving to The Gap and pulling over and just thinking there's no way out. I felt like there was no escape. I was ashamed.”
Candice Warner further revealed that she was left embarrassed and publicly humiliated over the incident, claiming the she felt like being “slut shamed” since she was a public figure.
“I was embarrassed. I was publicly humiliated. I think being the female in that situation in such a public place and it all being played out in the media, I was, I suppose, slut shamed.”
Candice Warner also thanked her brother for talking her out of suicide, claiming that one phone call with him changed her perspective. She added:
“I called my brother. He sort of talked me, not talked me out of it, but he just definitely said, 'I'm coming to get you, don't do anything stupid.”
Candice Warner is now a mother of three daughters with husband of 10 years, David Warner.
Much like David, Candice also made a name for herself in sports, having taken part in the Ironman series at a tender age of just 14. A couple of years later, she was named NSW state ironwoman champion.
