The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters stacked up a monumental 277-run total against Mumbai Indians in match number eight of the IPL 2024 season in front of their home crowd in Hyderabad.

After Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma blasted turbulent half-centuries at the top of the order, South African-based number five batsman Heinrich Klaasen piled on Mumbai Indians’ pain with a sizzling 34-ball 80*.

Their collective batting efforts stormed SRH to record IPL total, thus beating RCB’s 263-run effort from IPL 2013.

Former South African batsman AB de Villiers, one of the architects of RCB’s 263-run carnage against Pune Warriors nearly 11 years ago, reacted to SRH’s record-breaking innings at Hyderabad.

AB de Villiers ‘proud’ of SRH’s record

Former South African captain AB de Villiers seems to be unfazed by SRH’s milestone innings, even though it broke RCB’s decade-long IPL record.

Moreover, the RCB ‘Hall of Famer’ expressed his admirations for the SRH team and their South African-heavy batting line-up for attaining a significant height in IPL’s rich lore.

While speaking with Jio Cinema at the halfway stage of the game, AB de Villiers even claimed that he is “proud” of the fact that Heinrich Klaasen, a South African, played a hand in SRH’s record-breaking innings.

The former RCB cricketer himself played role a crucial in RCB’s 263-run total in Bengaluru back in IPL 2013 against Pune Warriors India by blasting an eight-ball 31. He said:

“Unbelievable scenes here tonight. A new record for the IPL. SRH, lot of South Africans there and that makes me proud.”

When asked if he is upset of his former team’s IPL record being broken at the hands of SRH owing to another South African player, AB de Villiers jokingly responded:

“Na, they can have it.”

Apart from Heinrich Klaasen, fellow South African batsman Aiden Markram also fuelled SRH’s high-scoring innings.

The former SRH captain scored an unbeaten 42 and shared 116 runs alongside Klaasen from the final nine overs of the innings.
