In the high-pressure world of IPL, emotions often run high. But very few moments stay etched in fans’ memories like the one Deepak Chahar recently revealed about MS Dhoni.
During his appearance on Bigg Boss 19’s family week, Chahar opened up about a fiery incident from the 2019 IPL that showed a rarely seen angry side of “Captain Cool”.
When Deepak Chahar faced the wrath of MS Dhoni
The match was between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) at Chepauk.
Punjab needed 39 runs from the last 12 balls while chasing 161. The pressure was massive, and MS Dhoni handed the ball to a young and inexperienced Deepak Chahar to bowl the penultimate over.
What followed was nothing short of a nightmare. Chahar started the over with a waist-high no-ball that Sarfaraz Khan smashed for a boundary.
The very next delivery was another no-ball, and Punjab took two more runs. In just two balls, and without even delivering a legal ball, Chahar had already given away eight runs. The stadium was tense, and MS Dhoni was furious.
According to Chahar, Dhoni walked straight up to him and said in anger, “Tu bewakoof nahi, main bewakoof hoon”. It was Dhoni’s way of taking responsibility, but the tone made Deepak Chahar feel like his career was about to end.
The bowler admitted he thought he would never be trusted to bowl at the death again. His head dropped, and he mentally prepared himself for the worst. But cricket, as always, had a dramatic twist waiting.
Deepak Chahar redeemed himself instantly
Instead of crumbling under pressure, Deepak Chahar pulled himself together. In the remaining deliveries of that over, he gave away only five runs and, most importantly, dismissed the dangerous David Miller.
From a potential disaster, he turned the over into a match-changing moment.
At the end, Chahar’s over cost 13 runs and brought a crucial wicket. Chennai Super Kings went on to win the match by 22 runs.
