As India gears up for the highly anticipated World Cup final against Australia on November 19, captain Rohit Sharma took a moment to acknowledge the crucial role played by pace sensation Mohammed Shami in the team's impressive campaign.

A month ago, Shami found himself on the sidelines, patiently awaiting an opportunity to play in the 2023 World Cup. Team dynamics had initially kept him benched, favoring a different combination that included Shardul Thakur. However, Hardik Pandya's injury eventually paved the way for Shami's inclusion in the playing XI.

Shami's return proved to be nothing short of spectacular. In his very first match of the tournament, he claimed a Player of the Match title with remarkable figures of 5/54 against New Zealand, aiding India in successfully chasing down 273 runs. This stellar performance marked the beginning of a series of outstanding displays by Shami, who has now accumulated 23 wickets in just six matches at a staggering average of 9.13. This includes three five-wicket hauls, solidifying his position as the fastest bowler to reach 50 wickets in World Cup history.

Rohit commended Shami's team spirit, emphasizing his supportive role for fellow bowlers- Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah. Despite the initial setback of not being part of the starting lineup, Shami's dedication and hard work shone through, reflecting his mental resilience. The Indian skipper highlighted Shami's preparedness and impactful performances, underscoring the bowler's commitment and invaluable contribution to the team.

"It was tough for Shami to not play the initial part of the World Cup. But he was there for the team to help Siraj and Bumrah. That shows the quality of him being the team man he is. We had a chat with him on why he is missing out. But he kept working hard, and that shows the kind of mental space he was in before the tournament. It says a lot about him. Once the opportunity opened up for him, he was right there. We can see with his performances,"  said Rohit Sharma during a press conference.

With Shami's fiery performances, India's bowling unit has reached new heights, adding an extra dimension to an already formidable attack. Shami's relentless and aggressive approach on the field has left an indelible mark, making him a standout performer and a vital asset for the Indian team.
