Less than two weeks before stepping onto the field as India’s youngest Test captain, Shubman Gill made a style statement in front of the camera lens. In a crisp photoshoot shared by the BCCI ahead of the high-stakes England tour, the 25-year-old posed in India’s whites showcasing the beginning of a bold new era in Indian cricket.
India’s upcoming five-Test series which will begin on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds, marks the start of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. But more than that it’s about rebuilding Team India after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Shubman Gill's Record In Test Cricket
Having taken over the reins from Rohit Sharma, Gill’s appointment as Test captain comes at a time when India’s red-ball future looks uncertain but promising. The right-hander has shown dominating form in limited-overs cricket, but his Test record has left room for improvement.
In 32 Tests, Gill has scored 1,683 runs at an average of 35.05, including five centuries. But the matter of concern is Gill's overseas record, where his batting average dips below 30. Adding to this his struggles against quality pace have been exposed in challenging conditions.
All Eyes On Gill's Leadership And Batting
As Shubman Gill prepares to captain India in a full-fledged Test series for the first time, selection questions loom large. Most notably, where will he bat?
Traditionally seen at No.3, there is speculation he could move to No.4 the spot vacated by Virat Kohli allowing someone like Sai Sudharsan or returning player Karun Nair to slot in one spot above.
If Gill does take No.4, it could be a strategic move to protect him from the new ball in England’s swinging conditions. He could likely give him more room and time to anchor the innings in the middle-order. But it’s a gamble, one that could backfire if early wickets fall.
