In a recent news, legend Sunil Gavaskar has come forward to support former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, who has been struggling with severe health issues in recent years. As per report by Times of India, Gavaskar’s CHAMPS Foundation has begun extending financial assistance to the ailing Vinod Kambli.

The former cricketer was hospitalised in December 2024 with a urinary infection and cramps. Having undergone two heart surgeries in 2013, he left-hander’s health has continued to deteriorate. He was discharged on January 1, 2025, after nearly two weeks of treatment in a Thane hospital.

The 53-year-old was recently seen at the inauguration of legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, where he appeared physically frail. Weeks later, he was admitted to hospital again.

During this difficult phase, Gavaskar had pledged to support Kambli, vowing that the 1983 World Cup-winning team would rally behind their fellow cricketer.

According to Gavaskar’s close friend and former Nirlon teammate Anil Joshi, the former India captain met with Kambli’s doctors-Dr. Shailesh Thakur and another attending physician.  After assessing the situation, he instructed the CHAMPS Foundation to begin support immediately.

"Gavaskar had wanted to help Kambli ever since he learned about his deteriorating health last year. A day after their meeting at Wankhede Stadium, Gavaskar met two of Kambli's doctors - Dr. Shailesh Thakur and another physician - and me. After being fully briefed on his condition, he instructed the CHAMPS Foundation to immediately begin financial and medical assistance," Anil Joshi told TOI.

It is important to note that starting from April, Kambli will receive INR 30,000 per month for life, along with an additional INR 30,000 annually for medical expenses through the CHAMPS Foundation.
