Defending champions England bowed out of the World Cup 2023 with grace as they routed Pakistan by 93 runs in their final league fixture. Earlier in the tournament, Jos Buttler’s troops conceded their world title by becoming one of the first sides to get eliminated from the semi-finals race.

Following an emphatic all-around performance against Pakistan, captain Buttler confidently asserted that their recent display showcased their true potential on their finest days. During the post-match presentation, the cricketer congratulated England’s outbound ODI star David Willey for delivering a game-changing spell in his final outing.

Buttler says no need for drastic changes in team

England captain Jos Buttler, while reflecting team’s disappointing title-defence in India, expressed his contentment over team’s emphatic win over Pakistan to finish the tournament on a high note. Speaking at the post-match ceremony, he said:

“Nice to put in a good performance to finish on a high. It's been a disappointing campaign overall and it is sinking in now. Lot to reflect on and happy to win the match. Today was great for us. This is what we are capable of and happy to win in the end.”

Buttler further congratulated David Willey for bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award in his final ODI outing for England. Willey jolted Pakistan early in their run-chase by accounting for both openers, to eventually finish with figures of 3-56. The outbound speedster also completed 100 ODI wickets through the course of his recent match-winning spell. Praising England’s white-ball star upon his celebrated exit, Buttler added:

“David Willey is a great performer since 2015 and has done well for us. To get Player of the Match in your last game is a great effort from us.”

The senior campaigner also added that there is no need to imply any radical changes in the England setup, much like how they underwent numerous in-squad changes following their disastrous run at the 2015 World Cup in Australia. The wicketkeeper-batsman claimed that the current team is already aware of the areas that need to be improved, and is hoping for his troops to bounce back stronger in the future.

“I know the road map for us. We don't need to change anything drastic like 2015. We need to look at the areas we need to put in the effort and hope to come back stronger. All good things come to an end, but we ended on a high.”

England’s exit win also helped them seal one of the eight berths for the Champions Trophy, set to be played in Pakistan in 2025. As of now, Jos Buttler and co. will be aiming to shrug off their failed title-defence as they are slated to tour West Indies for three ODIs and five T20I matches in December.
