The ongoing Asia Cup 2023 has managed to expose a few weaknesses in India's batting order, which pertains to swing bowling and quality spinners.

While Shaheen Afridi rocked India's top order in a Group A encounter, youngster Dunith Wellalage bamboozled the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Hardik Pandya, and KL Rahul on Tuesday when Sri Lanka faced off against India in the Super 4s stage.

Wellalage used his discipline in line-and-length to expectation, castling Sharma and Gill wickets, while others fell prey to his variations. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir came down heavy on Indian batters, whose troubles against spin-bowling are glaring.

Speaking during rain interruption in India's innings on Star Sports, Gambhir explained the main reason behind the Indian batter's poor play against Wellalage and also recalled how Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar outfoxed India in the ODI at Chennai as well.

Here's what Gambhir said

"This is becoming a pattern. You remember that match against Australia in Chennai when the ball was gripping a bit and India were chasing some 260 odd runs against spinners like Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. And we couldn't chase it. Whenever the ball grips, we struggle and we don't even know whether we can take the game deep. This is not a 350-run wicket...it's of 270.

Imagine if in 40 overs you are three down for 160 or 170, then when the ball grips, it is very important for the batters to adjust. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's were soft dismissals, but rest were beaten by the front foot. Rohit Sharma was beaten by pace, Gill by...that was a brilliant ball. You expect better from Indian batters"

The 2011 World Cup-winning captain further provided insight that Wellalage used the crease and angle to his advantage much like Ajantha Mendis.
