New Zealand faced a crushing 84-run defeat against Afghanistan in Providence Stadium, Guyana on Friday night in a Group C game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. 

Following the result which saw them go bottom of the table, Kane Williamson credited Afghanistan for the effort and called for a turnaround from his players.

Reflecting on the match, Williamson opened up about not being good enough in all the departments while getting outplayed by Afghanistan.

"Afghanistan simply outplayed us in all facets. To get a total like that on a fiddly surface, they kept wickets in hand and played it beautifully. The performance was not good enough from us. We need a quick turnaround, we have to regroup quickly and get onto the next challenge," said the Kiwi skipper.


"The fielding in the first ten overs, we didn't take our chances and the outcome shows. it is difficult [to win] on a wicket like that when you are not putting things together in the field. 


We have another big challenge coming for us and it is about putting together a performance we can be proud of.  Some things need to be addressed," concluded Williamson.

Up next, New Zealand will be facing the hosts, West Indies on the evening of June 12 at the Brian Lara Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
