Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has never been one to mince his words, and this time, he’s taken a jab at the fitness levels of the national cricket team. In a scathing critique, Butt compared the players’ reliance on athletic tape to something straight out of an old-school horror movie.
Salman Butt Slammed Pakistan Players Over Fitness
"They look less like athletes and more like mummies from the movies," he said.
Butt’s comments come in the wake of interim white-ball head coach Aqib Javed’s update on Fakhar Zaman’s recovery. The left-handed opener has been nursing a knee injury, and while Javed assured fans he’d return when fully fit, Butt had some advice for the veteran batter.
“Whether it’s Fakhar or any other player, the way things are going now, they need strength training,” Butt said bluntly.
Butt didn’t stop there. He pointed out that simply running laps isn’t going to cut it in modern cricket.
“Just running isn’t going to achieve anything. It’s as simple as that,” added the southpaw.
The former opening batter highlighted that building muscle isn’t just for looks—it’s a way to protect the body.
“Instead of wrapping your bones with tape, wrap them with muscle. Don’t fear gaining muscle weight—muscle is heavier than fat, but it protects your bones, and it enhances your agility, speed, power, and explosive strength,” stated Butt.
Butt Takes Dig At Pakistan Players’ Overuse of Athletic Tape
Salman Butt’s sharpest jabs were reserved for the team’s overuse of athletic tape.
"I look at these players and I’m amazed—there’s [athletic] tape on their knees, tape on their legs. They look less like athletes and more like mummies from the movies, wrapped in so many tapes.”
He urged the players to get serious about their fitness routines. The former skipper also made it clear that fitness isn’t just for older players. He added:
“If you want to enhance your career and compete at a higher level. Whether you’re 18 or 35, this is essential for every player.”
After wrapping up their white-ball series against Australia, Pakistan is gearing up for a three-match ODI and T20I series against Zimbabwe starting December 1.
