In a recent news, the legendary off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin stated his perspective and shared his thoughts on coaching. His thoughts clearly stated his belief in self-reliance and adaptability as a cricketer.

Throughout his 14-year international career, Ashwin has consistently evolved his game, not by depending heavily on coaches but by finding solutions to the challenges he faces.

While he acknowledges the guidance of respected figures like WV Raman and S. Badrinath, Ashwin has avoided becoming overly dependent on them.

R Ashwin Explains The Importance Of Self-Reliance In Cricket

Ashwin argues that every cricketer encounters unique challenges, and therefore, must develop the ability to find personalised solutions rather than relying solely on a coach's vision.

This approach has not only helped him maintain his performance over the years but has also allowed him to remain open-minded and innovative in his gameplay.

“See very often the challenge of a coach is to be able to offer you several solutions. This is because what works for one might not work for the other. One modern-day coaching philosophy which I totally disagree with is the fact that they try to copy-paste the same technique (solution) that’s worked for another cricketer,” Ashwin said.

He critiques the modern coaching philosophy of applying a one-size-fits-all approach, which he believes can lead to a lack of personal growth and a closed mindset.

For Ashwin, coaches like Raman have served more as catalysts for thought and introspection rather than figures to be latched onto for answers.

“People can give you a helping hand. But they cannot guide you through your career, you will have to be open to fresh ideas. For me, WV allowed me the freedom to express, and, you know, try new things. He also taught me how and on what path I need to travel, but he never said, ‘This is the path you need to travel upon. So in a way, in my early days, guidance from WV ensured that I was never really over-reliant on anybody.”

This independence in his cricketing journey has been central to his success, which has made him one of India's most successful Test bowlers.
