Former MI And CSK Star Appointed As The New Bowling Coach Of New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has announced the filling up of their vacant bowling coach post. Ex-Kiwi all-rounder, Jacob Oram has taken up the post, that was left empty since November last year after Shane Jurgensen's term was over. The official announcement says Oram will officially take up the post on October 7, 2024. 

Jacob Oram and his coaching career

Jacob Oram is no stranger to the coaching role. His transition from a player to a coach began in 2014 with New Zealand A. He then took up the job of New Zealand Women's team bowling coach in 2018 and was in the role till the end of the  ICC Women's World Cup in 2021.

During the last summer, he took up the role of Central District's Head Coach and led the team to their first Super Smash final after 2016. Oram has also served as assistant coach of Northern Warriors in the Abu Dhabi T10 league and as the bowling coach of MI Cape Town in SA20. 

Notably, Oram has also previously been with the men's team as a bowling coach during the 2023 Test tour to Bangladesh, the home T20I series against Australia in February and the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024. 

Jacob Oram's International Career

Jacob Oram has played 33 Tests, 160 ODIs and 36 T20Is for New Zealand. In these matches, Oram has 60, 173 and 19 wickets respectively. 

Besides being a very effective and efficient bowler, Jacob Oram was also pretty handy with the bat. He has scored 1,780 runs in Test cricket at an average of 36.53 with five Hundreds and six half-centuries. In ODIs, he had 2,434 runs with one Hundred and 13 fifties and in the shortest format of International cricket Oram scored 474 runs at a strike rate of 139.82

The star New Zealand all-rounder was also part of the Indian Premier League. Notably, Oram has been a part of the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings franchise. The majority of Oram's IPL career panned out in the CSK franchise. 

In his IPL career, Oram played 18 games, picking up nine wickets with an economy of 8.84. He also scored 106 runs in them at a strike rate of 98.15.
