Mumbai Indians (MI) faced yet another loss against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 3, 2024, at the Wankhede Stadium. Shreyas Iyer and company defeated Mumbai by 24 runs, handing Hardik Pandya's side its eighth defeat of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Batting first KKR scored 169/10 with significant contributions from Venkatesh Iyer (70 runs off 52 balls) and Manish Pandey (42 runs off 31 balls), after Kolkata's middle order collapsed completely with no contribution from Rinku Singh, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell.

MI's batting misery continued, with only Suryakumar Yadav scoring a brilliant fifty (56 runs off 35 balls). Other players of MI, starting from their openers Rohit Sharma to Ishan Kishan and the middle order made no contributions as such.

Sehwag raised question on MI's tactics vs KKR

Another setback for MI, that raised many questions and criticism was when Hardik Pandya and Tim David came in to bat at lower No. 7 and 8 respectively.

Taking to Cricbuzz former Indian player, Virender Sehwag highly criticised the tactics and decisions taken by the MI management to send experienced players like Hardik and Tim David at lower down the order in the run-chase.

“KKR saved Andre Russell; he played only two balls. Mumbai Indians saved Hardik Pandya and Tim David. What did you achieve by doing that? There were many deliveries left, and they all got out. You could've come earlier, or maybe you would have finished the game earlier, too. I don't know what happens to them when they chase. Hardik Pandya at seven and Tim David at 8. I just don't understand what they did. Are these players that bad that they will get out if they come earlier?” Sehwag said while questioning MI.

"Hardik Pandya batted at 4 consistently when he was the GT captain. What has happened here? It baffles me that the experienced players are coming so low."

Mumbai are currently placed in the ninth position in the points table with only 3 wins in 11 matches. The franchise will play its next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 6, 2024.
