Indian wicket-keeper batter KL Rahul recently shared his thoughts on retirement in a candid podcast conversation. As he approaches the twilight of his career, Rahul confronts the finite nature of a professional cricketer's life.

Rahul admitted that turning 30 triggered a sense of unease, making him realize that his playing days are numbered. He confessed that he could see the end of his cricketing journey on the horizon, which gave him anxiety.

However, he emphasized that he's not insecure about retirement, citing the examples of players like MS Dhoni who have extended their careers into their 40s.

I could see the end of the tunnel: KL Rahul

Rahul acknowledged that international cricket demands a high level of fitness, making it challenging to prolong his career beyond a certain point. Despite this, he's focused on making the most of his remaining years in the sport.

"There is no insecurity, but there is a feeling that all this ends, and for me it ends very quickly. If you are fit enough, you can play till 40. That is the maximum someone has played. Yes, there is MS Dhoni, who is 43 and is still playing. You can play the IPL and all of that, but not at the international level for too long,"  said KL Rahul.

Rahul acknowledged that international cricket demands high fitness levels, making it challenging to extend his career. Despite this, he's focused on making the most of his remaining years.

"For me, the anxiety was when I hit 30. I could see the end of the tunnel. Till I was 29, I could not see that. Some weird thing happened on my 30th birthday. I could see I have 10 more years to play cricket, and that gave me anxiety, and that is the first time I felt like 'This comes to an end at some point.' All I have done all my life is 'Cricket, Cricket, Cricket,' without imagining this comes to an end. Now I can see it. It is not too far away,"  he confessed.

KL Rahul was last seen in International colours in the Sri Lanka ODI series in August; he will now be seen in action in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 24-25, starting September 4.
