KL Rahul, India's premier wicketkeeper and captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), met with team owner Sanjiv Goenka in Alipore, Kolkata on August 27, sparking rumors about his future with the franchise.

While sources confirm Rahul will be retained as a player, his captaincy role is uncertain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. According to insiders, Rahul wants to focus on his batting, leading to speculation that Krunal Pandya or Nicholas Pooran may take over as captain.

The LSG source revealed, “The meeting was official with the CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, the captaincy and retention topics were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to captain the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batter. Goenka has full confidence in Rahul and he will be retained as a player, but will not be seen captaining the side.”

“We are still exploring the captaincy option but with BCCI agreeing on player retention conditions we have two players (Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran) in race,”  he added.

Sanjiv Goenka furious at KL Rahul in IPL 2024

This development comes after Goenka's animated reaction to LSG's 10-wicket loss to SRH in the 2024 IPL, where he was seen in a heated conversation with Rahul.

Despite this, the owner has chosen to retain KL Rahul, a significant move indicating his value to the team. KL Rahul will be seen in action in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 24-25, starting on September 4.
