Gautam Gambhir has taken over as India's head coach following the T20 World Cup 2024. He succeeded the Indian legend, Rahul Dravid, in the role. The team has experienced considerable success under the former Indian opener, especially in white-ball cricket. However, when it comes to success in the purest format of the game, India has failed to replicate the same success.
Gautam Gambhir's Tenure Has Some Rare Defeats In Test Cricket
Former Indian opener turned cricket analyst, Aakash Chopra, was recently seen speaking about Test cricket in Gambhir's tenure. Notably, recently team India fought hard and drew a five match series against England, showing much character and resilience. However, the start of his stint was much more disappointing.
Under Gambhir, India won their first Test series against Bangladesh. But since then, they were unable to perform to their best. The team lost a home series against New Zealand and then suffered a humiliating defeat to Australia in the last Border-Gavaskar series, played down under.
Aakash Chopra Talks About The Indian Test Transition
Aakash Chopra was heard talking about the same on his YouTube channel. He said,
"Gautam Gambhir has been the coach in 15 Tests, of which India have won five, lost eight, and two have been drawn. The win percentage is 33.33, which is not great. However, it is also true that India are going through a transition in Test cricket, and transition is painful."
"India have struggled a little in Test cricket. What happened against New Zealand was slightly surprising and worrying. That was definitely bad. In that backdrop, you went to Australia, and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Test careers ended there. They didn't retire there, but they didn't play Test matches after that," he added.
The comments by Aakash Chopra are quite insightful. On the surface, India's performance under Gambhir might look disappointing but his tenure has seen the retirement of legends and pillars of Indian cricket. This is a significant blow to deal with, and as the England tour suggests, the Indian team is performing well in that regard.
