Former England captain Eoin Morgan shared his enduring admiration for Test cricket, highlighting its personal significance. Nevertheless, he acknowledged the current challenges faced by the format, especially with the departure of Virat Kohli as the Test captain.

Kohli, known for his vocal advocacy and unwavering support for Test cricket, had an impressive captaincy record, securing 40 victories out of 58 matches with a commendable win percentage of 58.82. However, in January 2022, Kohli made the decision to relinquish the captaincy following India's series loss against South Africa.

Morgan noted that Kohli had consistently displayed his deep affection and passion for Test cricket, making his absence a significant loss for the format.

“Test cricket for me is still unbelievable. But it is a really challenging time for it. It has lost Virat Kohli as a Test captain and he always spoke vividly about how much he loved it and was passionate about it,”  Eoin Morgan was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

The 2019 World Cup-winning captain also credited current England Test captain Ben Stokes for his role in reigniting people's interest in Test cricket. Stokes, like Kohli, has taken on the responsibility of making the format as attractive as possible, contributing to its allure and popularity.

“(Ben) Stokes is the same, and he has taken on a huge responsibility to the game to make it as attractive as possible,”  Morgan added.

The departure of Kohli as a Test captain leaves a palpable void in the world of cricket, as his unmatched passion and unwavering dedication to the format have left an indelible mark. However, the presence of leaders like Stokes serves as a beacon of hope for Test cricket, as they continue to champion its cause and ensure its timeless allure in the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of the sport.
