Shubman Gill's reaction on Test captaincy (Source:@incricketteam,x.com)
In a historic development, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test team, succeeding Rohit Sharma who announced his retirement from red-ball cricket earlier this month. At just 25, Gill becomes the 37th player to lead India in Tests and the fifth youngest in history following in the footsteps of legends like Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, and Ravi Shastri.
Shubman Gill Reflects On Test Captaincy Role
Speaking in his first official interview since the announcement, Gill told BCCI.tv that the moment is deeply personal and significant, describing the opportunity to lead India in Test cricket as both a 'great honour' and 'big responsibility.'
“As a young kid, when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India," Gill said. “Not just play for India, but play Test cricket for India for a very long time. To be able to get this opportunity is a great honour and like you said, it’s a big responsibility."
Gill’s leadership debut will come during India’s five-match Test series in England. The series will also signal the beginning of the next ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. However, the new skipper will have his work cut out for him, as India will be without stalwarts — including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin.
At the moment, from what we’re looking…be it franchise cricket, you can see that he’s relishing the role. This is obviously going to be a lot harder. But those are the challenges you face playing international cricket," Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, said of Gill’s appointment.
It is important to mention that the BCCI has revealed the 18-member squad for the England tour on May 24.
Shubman Gill’s form in the ongoing IPL has been nothing short of sensational. Leading GT, the 25-year-old has impressed both as a batter and as a captain. The Titans currently sit at the top the standings, and Gill himself is second on the list of top run-getters, behind only his teammate Sai Sudharsan.
