Cricket legend Wasim Akram has hit back at critics who trolled him for his cheeky comment about Virat Kohli and Star Sports during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, clarifying that his words were taken out of context. After things got out of hand with memers making clips out of the show and putting them out in the wrong context, Akram came out in strong condemnation.
The controversy erupted after Wasim Akram, during a post-match analysis on a Pakistani TV channel, responded to a host’s praise of Kohli by quipping, “If you want to talk about Kohli, you should watch Star Sports.” While the panel laughed, social media erupted, with fans accusing Akram of mocking Kohli’s stature and suggesting bias in Indian media coverage.
Wasim Akram Lashes Out For Misinterpretation
In a recent appearance on another Pakistani sports show and talking about the Champions Trophy, Akram addressed the backlash, urging fans to watch the full video before reacting.
“One of my clips is circulating on social media where I’m speaking about Virat Kohli and Star Sports. Many misunderstood it without seeing the entire context,” Akram said.
The former Pakistan skipper emphasized that his remark was lighthearted and followed by genuine praise for Kohli.
“So attach the clip too where I praised him.” Akram added.
Kohli’s Rollercoaster Champions Trophy Campaign
The debate over Akram’s comment comes amid Kohli’s mixed fortunes in the tournament. After a subdued 22 off 38 balls against Bangladesh in India’s opener, the star batter silenced critics with a match-winning 100 not out off 111 balls against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Champions Trophy Hopes Dashed
The loss to India has left Pakistan’s campaign in tatters. After being bowled out for 241, with Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan offering limited resistance, Pakistan’s bowlers failed to defend the total. India’s dominant chase, powered by Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Gill, sealed the game way ahead of the death overs.
With two consecutive defeats, Pakistan are on the verge of elimination, needing miraculous results in their final group-stage match to stay alive. Their next fixture, a dead rubber against Bangladesh, will be a mere formality unless other results swing in their favour.
