The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise will be hoping that young batting all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy remains uncapped until the IPL 2025 mega auction, at least according to former Indian Test opener and cricket expert Aakash Chopra.

Nitish was recently picked in India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Bangladesh. If the batting all-rounder makes it into the playing XI in any one of the three impending games, he will enter the IPL 2025 mega auction horizon as an Indian international.

Chopra believes ‘capped Nitish’ will jeopardize SRH’s auction plans

Nitish Kumar Reddy shot himself to unprecedented fame at this year’s IPL 2024 season for the SRH. Playing 13 matches for the franchise, the 21-year-old uncapped cricketer minted 303 runs at an average of 33.66, all while maintaining a staggering strike rate of 142.92.

Following his breakthrough IPL season, many fans and cricket experts speculated that Nitish Kumar Reddy might well be retained by the SRH franchise ahead of the 2025 mega auction. However, with franchises being allowed a maximum of five capped retentions as per latest regulations, Nitish’s national selection in the upcoming T20Is against Bangladesh will jeopardize SRH’s auction plans, at least according to former Test opener Aakash Chopra.

The cricket expert believes that the SRH franchise already has four to five capped retentions in mind in the form of captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen and Abhishek Sharma. He said:

“SRH would be praying that Nitish Kumar Reddy remains uncapped. They would be saying - 'Please don't play him in the T20I series against Bangladesh'. Just like Harshit Rana, his name is also there in that team and if he gets a chance to play, he will also become capped.”

“They have to firstly retain the captain and Abhishek Sharma. You have to retain Heinrich Klaasen and it's great if you can get Travis Head. These four names come to my mind, to begin with. Pat Cummins, since he is the captain, and he managed the team very well, you will want to retain him.”

With senior all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube in the team, it remains an unlikely scenario that Nitish Kumar Reddy will be joining the Indian playing XI against Bangladesh. However, the team management might give him an international cap in the third match if Team India manages to seal the series with wins in the first two games.

The T20I series between India and Bangladesh will commence on October 6 in Gwalior and conclude on October 12 in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the IPL 2025 mega auction is scheduled to be held sometime later this year.
