Ahead of the World Cup 2023 kick-off, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has put his weight behind Suryakumar Yadav, earmarking him as a potential game-changer for the Indian side.

Harbhajan touts Suryakumar as key player for India in World Cup 2023

Drawing parallels between Yadav and cricket icon AB de Villiers, Harbhajan highlighted Yadav's unique playing style and his X-factor on the pitch.

Despite Yadav's lukewarm ODI track record, Harbhajan remains optimistic about his chances in the World Cup, particularly after his commendable performance in the recent ODI series against Australia.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave, Bhajji mentioned that if Yadav harnesses his full potential, he could not just be instrumental in winning matches, but also be a key figure in clinching the tournament for India. He went on to express that if he were in a selector’s position, he would prioritize selecting Yadav right after team captain Rohit Sharma.

"Looking forward to Suryakumar Yadav. He is an X-factor. If he gets going, he won't just win you the match, but he will win you the tournament. If I were a selector, I would have SKY as the second player in my team after the captain. I would play SKY if I were part of the team management. Who knows if they will play him or not?" said Harbhajan.

The veteran spinner further emphasised the importance of having Yadav in the team, suggesting that even if he doesn't immediately succeed, he should be persisted with for the course of the tournament.

"I don't know what it is about him (Suryakumar Yadav). He reminds me of AB de Villiers. We need a player like him to play. Even if flops, I would still play him for the remaining matches,” added the erstwhile cricketer.

It is worth mentioning that in the lead-up to the World Cup, Yadav's inclusion in the squad over Sanju Samson was a topic of discussion. Yet, many believe that his standout skills and recent form make him an asset to the Indian side.

With the World Cup commencing on Thursday and India's first clash against Australia slated for October 8 in Chennai, fans and experts will be keenly observing how Yadav's journey unfolds in this global event.
