A key component of England's World Cup title defense is former captain Joe Root. Root's batting was instrumental in England lifting their maiden Cricket World Cup in 2019 and will once again be needed to produce similar heroics.

England will kick off their World Cup 2023 campaign against rivals New Zealand today at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Root set to surpass Sourav Ganguly

While the Jos Buttler-led XI will look to start the tournament on a winning note, Root will want to surpass former India captain Sourav Ganguly's tally of 18,575 international runs.

Ganguly's 18,575 runs included 11,363 ODI, and 7,212 Tests, while Root's 18,555 is an accumulation of  6,245 ODI, 893 T20I and 11,416 Test runs.

Root, currently sits on 18,555 international runs, including and needs 445 runs to 19,000 international and 254 to 6,500 ODI runs, respectively.

Interestingly, Root is the second-highest run-getter for England in World Cups with 758, having featured in 2015 and 2019 editions.

The 32-year-old slammed 202 runs in World Cup 2015 and increased his tally to 556 in the 2019 edition in England.

The prolific batter is already the leading run-getter for England in international cricket, which is still miles ahead of the second-placed former Three Lions captain Sir Alastair Cook's tally of 15,737 runs.

Root enjoys decent success on Indian pitches as well, slamming 295 runs in seven ODIs with three half-centuries.
