Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill is set to headline his team’s top-order against England in the upcoming ODI series as well as in the subsequent 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE. Ahead of the curtain-raiser against England in Nagpur, the 25-year-old stated that he does not have any ‘toxic’ competition with teammates and fellow top-order stars Abhishek Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

It is worth noting that Jaiswal has already usurped Shubman Gill as India’s primary choice for opening the innings in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma has soared his way to become India’s first-choice T20I opener.

Shubman Gill denies hostility with batting mates

Shubman Gill was recently appointed as Team India vice-captain for the ODI series against England and for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in the UAE. A day before the first ODI match against England in Nagpur, the 24-year-old stated that while he is childhood friends with Abhishek Sharma, he also holds a good companionship with Yashasvi Jaiswal and he does not bear any ‘toxic competition’ with either of the two star opening batters.

While speaking with the reporters, Shubman Gill said:

“Abhishek is a childhood friend of mine, Jaiswal is also a good friend. I don’t think there’s any toxic competition between us. Obviously, when you are playing for the country, you want to perform in every match. [But] you don’t really think, ‘Oh, I wish this guy doesn’t perform’ or ‘I wish he doesn’t perform’. You are playing for… you are representing the country, you are playing for the country so whoever does well, you feel good for them and you congratulate them.”

While Abhishek Sharma recently starred in India’s 4-1 T20I series win over England, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are slated to don the national jersey for the ODI series against Jos Buttler’s visiting troops. The series serves as a precursor to the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and in the UAE.
