Team India is all geared up for the upcoming ODI series against England starting from February 6 in Nagpur. After a dominant T20I series win, the home side is eager to continue their strong run. However, Karun Nair's exclusion from the squad, despite his stunning form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has raised eyebrows.

Ahead of the first ODI, India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill reflects on the controversy surrounding Nair’s non-selection. He cleared the strategy and gave valid reasons behind this move.

Gill On Karun Nair’s Snub

Karun Nair remembered for his iconic 303-run knock against England in 2016, set the Vijay Hazare trophy on fire with a staggering 779 runs in just 9 matches at an average of 389.00. After that, speculation arose over his selection in the ODI squad against England. However, when he missed out on a spot, questions began swirling over the team management's decision. Before stepping into the first ODI, Shubman Gill reflected on this.

“Karun had a great Vijay Hazare Trophy, but that doesn’t mean the current players should be dropped. They have also performed well to reach this stage.” Gill said.

“We have lost only one game in the World Cups. The players in the squad have contributed significantly, and while it’s unfortunate for those excelling in domestic cricket who weren’t picked, constant chopping and changing will affect players’ confidence. Without continuity, we can never build a strong team.” he added.

On His New Role

Before playing in the upcoming Champions Trophy, Team India is set to face England in their final ODI assignment. In a significant career milestone, Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain for the ODI series. The announcement was made by captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the squad reveal. Before taking up the new role, Gill shared his thoughts on that.

“I take it as a challenge to lead my way, firstly with my performance and then definitely in the field if Rohit bhai would want my opinions. It’s my duty to let him know what my thoughts are.” Gill said.
