'Shame! Two Tests Don't Do Justice ...' - De Villiers 'Frustrated' On IND-SA Series

Given the history and the rivalry shared by the two great nations, legend AB de Villiers believes it's disappointing that the forthcoming India versus South Africa series has been confined to just two Test matches. The Proteas great reckons the prestigious nature of the rivalry deserved at least "3-4 Tests."

India and South Africa will be battling out in Centurion and Cape Town for not just the critical World Test Championship (WTC) points but also the prestigious Gandhi-Mandela Trophy, which currently rests with the Proteas since they clinched the thrilling 2021-22 home series 2-1.

Back in 2015, when the trophy was introduced as a mark of respect towards two of the greatest sons of the soil, Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, the India-South Africa Test series was played over four matches. Since then, however, each Test series played between the two countries in 2018, 2019, and 2021-22 has seen the fixtures diminish.

AB De Villiers Calls For More India-South Africa Tests

Not only the upcoming Test series in South Africa but also Proteas' return series on Indian shores in the winter of 2025 is also just a two-match affair. De Villiers found it a travesty of justice and called for more Test matches to be arranged between the two great rivals by BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA).

"It is frustrating (2 tests) from a South African point of view. India gets their share of 3–4 tests per series when they play in India. India, Australia, and England get these Test matches," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

"It is a shame because these two teams have a great rivalry and have such a great history. Indian players love coming to South Africa. Two Tests does not do justice to the rivalry."

Notably, India have clinched four Test match wins on South African shores since their maiden trip in 1991-92 but have yet to win a series in the rainbow nation. Rohit Sharma's men will stand a chance to rewrite the history books when they take on the Proteas in the Boxing Day and New Year's Tests in Centurion and Cape Town from December 26-30 and January 3-7, respectively.
