Team India clinched the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup by demolishing South Africa in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. With the historic feat, Harmanpreet Kaur became only the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2011), and the first women’s captain to lift the World Cup trophy.

Ahead of any World Cup final, teams often find themselves inundated with advice from all corners. However, it was the words of the great Sachin Tendulkar that truly resonated with Harmanpreet Kaur, as per the skipper herself.

Harmanpreet Kaur says players calling each other ‘world champion’

While speaking on the ICC Review, Harmanpreet Kaur recalled an advice she received from former Indian cricketer and all-time great Sachin Tendulkar a night before the final. She claimed that Tendulkar shared his own experiences and asked the women’s team to maintain their balance. Harmanpreet Kaur said:

“The night before the match, Sachin Tendulkar sir called. He shared his experience and asked us to keep our balance. When the game is going fast, just slow it down a little. Try and control it because when you go too fast, chances are you can stumble. That’s what we need to avoid.”

Harmanpreet Kaur also admitted that the players have been calling each other “world champion” ever since winning the World Cup 2025 title last week. She added:

“Whenever we are seeing each other, we are just saying, 'world champion'. It's a very different feeling. We were waiting when we would get to feel this way.”

Harmanpreet Kaur recalled the night of the final, claiming it was a special moment lifting the trophy in front of her parents at the DY Patil Stadium.

“My mother and father were there. For me, it was a very special moment to lift the World Cup trophy with them. Since my childhood, they have heard me say that I want to wear India’s jersey, play for the country, lead the team and win the World Cup.”

What’s next for Harmanpreet Kaur and Indian women’s team?

With no immediate international cricket in sight, Harmanpreet Kaur and the rest of Indian Women’s players will next be seen participating in the fourth edition of the WPL in January next year.

The tournament will be followed by an all-format tour of Australia between February and March.
