'Rohit Should Carry On..'- Legendary Batter On How India Can Win WC Final

Indian batting legend Gundappa Viswanath highlighted the key factors in Team India's quest to overhaul Australia and lift the ICC World Cup 2023 title in Ahmedabad on Sunday (November 19).

Viswanath, who has been following the tournament and India's impeccable run to the final closely, believes Rohit Sharma's starts and India's robust bowling unit will dictate the proceedings.

For the great former middle-order Test player, the imposing knocks played by Rohit at the beginning of the Indian innings have allowed Men in Blue to enter the contest with a strong footing. The inspirational skipper has donned the aggressive avatar throughout and smashed a highly impactful 550 runs at a strike rate of 124.15.

On the bowling front, veteran pacers Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah have been in devastating form with 23 and 18 wickets, respectively, and allowed the rest of the cast featuring spin twins Kuldeep Yadav (15) and Ravindra Jadeja (16) and third seamer Mohammed Siraj (13) to flourish.

Viswanath Hails Rohit Sharma, Indian Bowling

Speaking to PTI, Viswanath reckoned Rohit's excellent top-order cameos and India's relentlessly bowling attack will be key to the side's finale performance against the Aussies in front of a packed 1,30,000-seated crowd in Ahmedabad.

"Sometimes when you are not getting a break, Shami comes and straightaway gets you a wicket. Just see how many times he got first-ball wickets. Unfortunately, Hardik (Pandya) got injured and he (Shami) came and grabbed the opportunity," Viswanath said.

"He (Shami) hits the deck and got some pace. He skids through, that's the beauty of his bowling, so it goes a bit rapidly and surprises the batsmen. Others also, (Jasprit) Bumrah is Bumrah, he has a good repertoire and (Mohammed) Siraj getting better. All in all, our attack is more balanced than Australians, no doubt."

Viswanath feels Rohit's aggressive top-order batting has instilled great stability and role-clarity in the rest of the line-up with fellow great Virat Kohli enjoying a spectacular run and standing as the numero uno Indian run-getter with 711 runs in 10 innings.

"The way Rohit has been giving aggressive starts in the powerplay even though he is not getting big scores like 100 which he is capable of. The other batters are following that pattern," Viswanath said.

"This is the final, so he (Rohit) should carry on. We all know what kind of batter he is, he's capable of scoring 150 if not more, that should be on his mind. Instead of giving platform to other batters, once he gets in and comes closer to powerplay, he should continue, that will help the team and give more worry to opponent," he added.
