India’s strength and conditioning coach Ankit Kaliyar has praised team skipper Rohit Sharma for his approach towards fitness. Kaliyar, associated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), also compared captain Sharma’s fitness with that of his teammate Virat Kohli.

Ankit Kaliyar recently signified the importance of maintaining peak fitness for cricketers and credited Virat Kohli for injecting a good fitness culture within the Indian cricket team. Ankit also praised current Indian captain Rohit Sharma for maintaining a good standard for himself and compared him with none other than fitness zealot Kohli himself.

As per the strength and conditioning coach, Sharma is as fit as Virat Kohli even though the former looks a bit bulkier. He added that the Indian skipper always passes his Yo-Yo tests and is currently among the fittest cricketers around. While speaking with the Times of India, he said:

“Rohit Sharma is a fit player. He has good fitness. He looks a bit bulky but he always passes the Yo-Yo test. He is as fit as Virat Kohli. He looks like he is bulky but we have seen him on the field. His agility and mobility are amazing. He is among the fittest cricketers.”

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli recently turned up for Team India at the 2023 World Cup, where they lost to Australia in the final. Since the conclusion of the tournament, the two cricketers have distanced themselves from the team’s subsequent five-match T20I home series against Australia, as well as opted themselves out of India’s white-ball fixtures in South Africa.

Sharma and Kohli will be re-joining the Indian camp in time for their two-match Test series against the Proteas in late December. The first of the two Tests will be commencing from December 26 onwards at Centurion Park and the fixtures constitute a part of the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
