With curtains gradually falling down on MS Dhoni’s glittering IPL career, fellow Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant might well take his place as Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) elite stumper, as per former cricketer and expert analyst Deep Dasgupta.

Dhoni, aged 42, recently confirmed his return to action as he became one of CSK’s 19 retained players for next year’s IPL 2024 season. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman was last seen in action at the final of IPL 2023 earlier this year, where he led his CSK troops to their fifth title victory.

Dasgupta addresses big Rishabh Pant possibility

Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta recently discussed a huge possibility of Rishabh Pant finding a new IPL home by 2025 in the form of CSK. Debuting in the IPL with the Delhi Capitals franchise back in 2016, Rishabh Pant has since remained an integral force within their ranks, continuing to wield substantial influence.

Dasgupta believes the young wicketkeeper-batsman might well be roped in by CSK for IPL 2025 in place of ageing warrior MS Dhoni. The Bengal veteran claimed that both Dhoni and Pant share similar attacking and positive mindsets, and also hold great respect for each other. During a recent interview, he said:

“Don’t be surprised if they get Rishabh Pant by IPL 2025. MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant are very close. Obviously, Rishabh adores MS, and MS also likes him very much. They spend a lot of time together. Their connection and Rishabh’s thinking are very similar, considering he is very attacking and positive. He’s always talking about winning and whatnot.”

Rishabh Pant was involved in a near-fatal car accident last December, which subsequently forced him to skip the entirety of IPL 2023 season earlier this year. Yet to play a single competitive match in nearly 12 months, Pant was retained by the Delhi Capitals franchise on IPL 2024 retention day ahead of the forthcoming auctions.
