Sarfaraz Khan pounded his maiden Test century through the course of his 150-run blitz against New Zealand on Day 4 of the gripping Bengaluru Test. The 27-year-old faced just 195 deliveries in the process, and smeared 18 boundaries and three sixes in his courageous second-innings knock.

The innings seems to have further solidified Sarfaraz’s prospects of finding a place in India’s travelling group for the upcoming five-match Test tour of Australia. Ahead of the blockbuster tour, Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav recently revealed that Sarfaraz has been working hard on his fitness in the meantime, and the dashing Mumbai cricketer also received much assistance from wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant.

Suryakumar Yadav reveals Pant’s influence

While speaking with the Indian Express, Suryakumar Yadav revealed that Sarfaraz Khan has been working on his fitness with the Indian team strength and conditioning coach. Moreover, he also stated that Rishabh Pant has provided a chef to take care of Sarfaraz’s food in a bid to get in better shape for India’s upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series ‘Down Under’. Suryakumar said:

“Sarfaraz is working on his fitness with the Indian team strength and conditioning coach, and Rishabh (Pant) has provided him with a chef who is taking care of his food. The intent is that by the time he reaches the Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, his body is in better shape.”

Suryakumar Yadav further revealed that even though Sarfaraz’s body type seems ‘fat’, the youngster has the skillset of making ‘daddy hundreds’.

“Fitness is important in this sport. As he gets older, his body will change. He is working hard now; he will be fine in the future. His body type might make him look fat but if you ask him to bat 450 balls, score double hundred, triple hundred, daddy hundred, he has that skill.”

Sarfaraz Khan shared a fighting 177-run partnership with Rishabh Pant for the fourth wicket against New Zealand on Day 4. While Sarfaraz brought up his maiden Test century in the process, Pant smacked an attacking 99 to overcome India’s huge 356-run deficit.

Team India is scheduled to tour Australia in mid-November, i.e., shortly after the conclusion of the ongoing series against New Zealand.
