If 2025 is anything to go by, sporting curses are finally being broken. RCB finally lifted the IPL trophy while PSG finally got their hands on that elusive Champions League silverware.

Aiden Markram Hopes 2025 Trophy Trend Rubs Off On South Africa At WTC Final

And now, Aiden Markram is quietly hoping the domino effect continues, this time in whites. The Proteas are gearing up to face Australia in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 Final at Lord’s starting June 11 and Markram, for one, wouldn’t mind riding the coattails of this "break-the-jinx" season.

“There's not much chat around it,” Markram shrugged when speaking to ICC Digital, “but hopefully that trend can continue.”

You can't blame him for hoping. South Africa has flirted with greatness across formats. They made the final of the T20 World Cup last year. Reached semis in the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy. Topped the WTC standings. The Proteas have been knocking on the door long enough, it’s about time the door flings open.

No Overthinking, Just Execution

There’s no voodoo talk or superstition in the camp though. Markram made it clear that the squad is locked in, focused more on execution than omens.

"The guys have a skillset that have got them here, got them selected, throughout the cycle performed as well, doing those skills. So it's about backing that, our best skill versus their (Australia’s) best skill, and we'll see where it lands us at the end of the day." he said.

It’ll be a classic five-day tussle. The venue is Lord’s. The ball is Dukes. The opponent is none other than defending champs Australia. But for South Africa, it’s about staying in the zone, not letting the moment get too big.

Past Scars But A Fresh Outlook

Yes, the last time these two sides met in the WTC cycle, South Africa were outplayed. A 2-0 series loss in Australia still lingers in the background. But this is a different ball game, a different team and a chance to write a brand-new chapter.

Markram knows the threat the Aussies pose. But he also knows there’s not much they haven’t seen. With Stuart Broad stepping in as a fast-bowling consultant and a warm-up clash against Zimbabwe in the bag, the Proteas are sharpening their tools quietly in Arundel.

“The energies have been good,” Markram said. “There’s lots of excitement. I’m sure the nerves will kick in closer to the game.”

It’s been a long time coming. The Proteas are due a major ICC title. And in a year where the impossible has already become reality for others, maybe, just maybe, it’s South Africa’s turn to lift the WTC final trophy and bury the ghosts of heartbreak once and for all.
