South African opener Quinton de Kock shared a 204-run second wicket stand with number three Rassie van der Dussen. Both batters belted imperial hundreds, before Aiden Markram stormed his way to a whirlwind 54-ball 106 to take his side to a colossal 428-5 upfront.

Markram’s innings marked the fastest-ever century recorded in a World Cup game, while Proteas overall effort emerged as the highest-ever team total at the grandest stage.

Aiden Markram also added that a win of this margin early in the 2023 World Cup was crucial for South Africa in their bid of setting up a tone for the remainder of the tournament.

“Feels fantastic. The platform was laid beautifully by Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen. Gave us the freedom. Some days it comes off, some days it doesn't. Pretty clear with what's expected of me as a batter. Like every other team, we try to play a positive brand of cricket. Initially you want to get a feel for the wicket. Ultimately, it's about backing your options. Happy with how it worked out. The wicket played really well. The ball was travelling. Feels good to be on the positive side of things. To start well in the World Cup was important and something that we talked about.”

South Africa will now face Australia in their subsequent World Cup 2023 challenge in Lucknow’s Ekana Cricket Stadium. Their much-awaited fixture will be played on October 12.
