Brief Scores: South Africa: 428-5 (50 overs) [Rassie van der Dussen: 108 (110), Aiden Markram: 106 (54); Dilshan Madushanka 2/86 (10), Dunith Wellalage 1/81 (10)] defeated Sri Lanka: 326 all out (44.5 overs) [Charith Asalanka: 79 (65), Kusal Mendis: 76 (42); Gerald Coetzee 3/68 (9), Kagiso Rabada 2/50 (7.5)] by 102 runs.

In a resounding display of dominance, South Africa announced their arrival at the 2023 World Cup with a commanding victory over Sri Lanka. Each of their batters, sans Temba Bavuma, came to the fore as Proteas shattered several batting records in their innings upfront.

The bowlers completed the demolition job later in the evening, solidifying South Africa’s impressive win in Delhi and setting up an early tone for their campaign in the tournament.

Boundaries and centuries galore in South Africa’s Delhi epic

Sri Lankan new-ball pacer Dilshan Madushanka briefly etched his side’s moment of hope by dismissing South African captain Temba Bavuma for eight early in the innings.

However, as innings progressed, all Sri Lankan aspirations quickly dissolved as opener Quinton de Kock and number three Rassie van der Dussen choreographed a breathtaking 204-run partnership, with each unleashing resplendent centuries from their ends.

Piling on the Lankan pain and capitalizing on Proteas’ blistering start at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Aiden Markram orchestrated his own thunderous 49-ball ton, wreaking havoc and chaos until the moment of his departure. Madushanka, who had claimed the opening wicket, dismissed Markram a tad too late to finish with 2-86 from his 10 overs.

Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller also blasted sparkling 30s at the death as South Africa mounted a colossal 428-5 upfront, a record World Cup total. As one can expect, all four Sri Lankan bowlers who bowled out their overs ended up conceding over 80 runs each, with Matheesha Pathirana coping the most punishment by finishing with figures of 1-95.

Sri Lanka shows fight but falls way short

Sri Lankan number three Kusal Mendis did the bulk of his side’s scoring in the powerplay, considering both openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera were cleaned up by Marco Jansen inside the double-digits.

The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman staged Sri Lanka’s lone rebellion at the top by defying South Africa’s new-ball attack and mounting run-chase pressure. Mendis launched eight sixes and four boundaries in his 42-ball innings to slap a fighting 76. He eventually perished in front of Kagiso Rabada’s steaming pace after taking his side past the 100-run mark in just a little over 12 overs.

Charith Asalanka and captain Dasun Shanaka kept the run-scoring momentum going by conjuring up sparkling half-centuries, but their run-chase resistance merely kept Sri Lanka’s losing margin down to 102 runs.

Gerald Coetzee unfurled the spell of the match with his 3-68 from nine overs, while Rabada packed the knockout punch as the Sri Lankans were folded up for 326 in response.
