A social media controversy erupted after a video surfaced online that showcased India’s flag was missing at Karachi’s National Stadium on February 17, 2025. The video triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for excluding the Indian flag in retaliation for India’s decision not to play in Pakistan. However, the PCB has dismissed the controversy, and also clarified that only the flags of teams playing at specific venues in Pakistan have been hoisted.

Why Was India’s Flag Not Hoisted At Karachi?

A PCB source told IANS that India is playing all its matches in Dubai under the tournament's hybrid model, which was introduced after the BCCI refused to send its team to Pakistan due to security concerns.

"As you know, India is not coming to Pakistan to play its matches during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025; the National Stadium in Karachi, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium and the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore have hoisted flags of countries that are going to play at the said venues," said a PCB source to IANS.

Bangladesh's Flag Also Missing At Karachi Stadium

The source also explained why Bangladesh’s flag was missing, stating that Bangladesh has not yet arrived in Pakistan and will play its first match against India in Dubai.

Secondly, the Bangladesh team has not yet arrived in Pakistan and will be playing its first match against India in Dubai. Therefore, their flags have not been hoisted and the other nations, who have arrived here and will be playing in Pakistan... their flags are there at the stadium." said a PCB source to IANS.

PCB Slams ‘Ill-Intended’ Social Media Narrative

The PCB has downplayed the controversy, calling it an attempt to create unnecessary tension. He also pointed out that banners featuring all captains, including India’s, have been put up in various Pakistani cities, showcasing a neutral approach to the event.

“I don’t think the PCB needs to issue an official statement on this. The controversy is being manufactured without facts and aims to damage Pakistan’s image as the host nation,” the source added.

The Champions Trophy is making a comeback after eight years, with Pakistan hosting an ICC event for the first time since co-hosting the 1996 World Cup.
