'Past His Best' - Geoffrey Boycott Talks About Rohit Sharma's Dusk

Geoffrey Boycott rallied on the wave of England's memorable comeback win in the Hyderabad Test and took an aim at Indian captain Rohit Sharma, calling the veteran opener ageing and "past his best" with the bat.

The former England batter said Rohit seems satisfied playing attractive cameos and doesn't have the hunger to produce big milestones that would benefit the Indian team.

Rohit missed out on two encouraging starts in the first Test where a disappointing hoick ended his first innings for 24 and then a brittle defensive prod saw him dismissed for 39 in the second innings.

Rohit's captaincy also came up for flak after England managed to forge a tremendous comeback in the Test match despite conceding a first-innings lead of 190. India looked listless and uninspiring in their effort to withstand Ollie Pope's magnificent 196 before showing little intent to ruffle resurgent left-arm spinner Tom Hartley in the run-chase.

"Their captain Rohit Sharma is nearly 37 and past his best. He makes pretty cameos but has only scored two Test hundreds at home in four years. They are also weak in the field," Boycott wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

"This India team is ripe for the taking, and England have a golden chance to be the first side to topple them on their own patch for 12 years. India badly miss Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja has a hamstring injury and will not play the second Test," he added.

Rohit would've been livid to have missed out on two promising starts in Hyderabad as he remains a key driver of India's fortunes for the rest of the series. The elegant opener averages 50.34 from his 28 Tests since the time he started opening the innings for India.
