India’s next-gen superstar Shubman Gill spoke at length about the world-class facilities of BCCI’s new Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. He visited the centre recently for the rehabilitation of his neck spasm injury.
Gill sustained a neck injury during the Test series against South Africa. What initially appeared as a niggle turned into a medical emergency as the Test captain spent a couple of days in the hospital.

After getting discharged from the hospital, Shubman Gill was ruled out of the ODI series against South Africa and sent to rehab at the BCCI CoE situated in Bengaluru.
He spent a couple of weeks training under the guidance of fitness coaches and medical supervision. Soon, Gill was declared fit and is most likely to feature in the 5-game T20I series against South Africa scheduled for this week.
Meanwhile, in a BCCI released video, Shubman Gill sat down for a chat and rated the BCCI CoE facilities very highly.
He confirmed feeling better after a neck injury and admitted that the training setup is beyond his expectations. Gill called the place a ‘paradise’ for any athlete.
"I'm feeling much better. I think the day that I came here, from that day till today, I've had quite bit of skill sessions and some training sessions. So, I feel much much better. From recovery to training, for an athlete, it (CoE) can't get any better. It's a paradise for any athlete to come here and want to get physically and mentally better. You can't ask for better facilities. You can go to the oxygen chamber, there's cryo there. Some of the things I've used for the recovery is pretty amazing," Gill said in the video.
Shubman Gill also added that in his junior days, being called to NCA was a big deal. He already considers himself a part of the elite category of athletes, as he gets to visit CoE to train.
"What stood out for me was there are so many machines that I don't know how to use. That itself tells you how big the setup is. Playing U14 and U16, it used to be thing among use that someone has been to the NCA and come back. Watching that player, we used be in awe. When you're coming here, you're cream of the crop."
"You have the skill set to be able to reach to the next level. And making use of the facility to go to the next level physically, mentally. You also have coaches, trainers and physios to work with. But how willing are you to work on yourself, that aspect will take you a notch up from the rest of the players. That's how whoever comes here can make use of those things."
That being said, the T20I series between India and South Africa will begin on Tuesday, December 9, at Cuttack. Gill has already reached there and is expected to be a part of the playing XI.
Will Shubman Gill continue to open?
India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav backed the decision to open with Shubman Gill over Sanju Samson for the India vs South Africa T20I series, saying Gill had earned the spot based on prior opportunities and performances.
Samson, who impressed as an opener in late 2024 with three centuries in five innings, was moved to the middle order after Gill’s return and struggled for consistency during the Australia series.
But Suryakumar has clarified that the batting order won’t change anytime soon. Sanju Samson, however, will still remain India’s first-choice wicket-keeper in the T20Is.
