South African domestic team Warriors have been punished by Cricket South Africa (CSA) for not adhering to the board’s selection protocols. Going up against Dolphins at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on February 16 in match number four of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One, the Warriors fielded lesser than the minimum requirement of black African players in the playing XI.

As a result, the Warriors were docked crucial tournament points which costed them a place in the knockouts. Moreover, the CSA has also imposed a monetary fine on the Warriors team for breaching the board’s quota rules.

Warriors lose playoffs spot in One-Day Cup

Warriors fielded two black African cricketers in the match against Dolphins on February 16 at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban instead of the required three. Giving no prior notice or explanation for the exemption, the Warriors have been penalized all five points they garnered from the game. The docking of points made them slip from three to four on the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One points table, thus costing them a place in the tournament’s playoffs.

Moreover, CSA also imposed a monetary fine on the Warriors, where 50 percent is to be payable before the end of the current financial year.

Nonetheless, in the match against Dolphins on February 16, the Warriors emerged victorious by a huge 126-run margin. Batting first, Warriors hauled 343-2 from 50 overs courtesy of a splendid unbeaten century from opener Jordan Hermann. Matthew Breetzke and Beyers Swanepoel also clubbed majestic half-centuries to fuel Warriors’ slog overs charge.

With the ball, Andile Mokgakane picked up four wickets at an expense of just 23 runs to restrict Dolphins to just 217 in 40.2 overs.
