In a resounding display of prowess, India sent shockwaves through the cricketing world by clinching the Asia Cup with a convincing 10-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in a one-sided final. The performance has ignited discussions and sparked enthusiasm among cricket aficionados as India readies itself to host the upcoming ODI World Cup after a hiatus of more than 12 years. Former Indian cricket captain and World Cup-winning legend, Kapil Dev, shared his insights on India's chances and the vital role that luck plays in the sport.

Kapil Dev, while expressing optimism about India's prospects in the ODI World Cup, refrained from bestowing the "favourite" tag on the hosts. He emphasised the importance of finishing in the top four and then depending on the stroke of luck to secure victory.

Here's what former captain said

"I think if we can come in top four, that is more important and then it will be about stroke of luck and everything."

He further elaborated,

"We can't say right now that we are favourites, of course, our team is very good. Heart says something else, mind says no, we have to work very hard. I know our team, I don't know about other teams, so I would say it is unfair for me to give a blank answer."

Kapil Dev's cautious optimism underscores the competitive nature of the sport, where unforeseen twists and turns can change the course of a match or tournament.

Kapil Dev also praised India's fast bowlers for their remarkable performance in the Asia Cup final. India's pacers claimed all 10 wickets, with Mohammed Siraj delivering a spellbinding performance, ending with figures of 6 for 21. Kapil noted,

"It is wonderful to see Siraj bowl. I feel so happy that nowadays in all continents, our fast bowlers are taking all 10 wickets; that's the cherry on the cake."

While the Asia Cup victory was a moment of celebration, Kapil Dev expressed a desire for closer contests in cricket.

"As a cricketer, I would like to see much closer games, but as a player, I feel bowl them out for 30 and win. As a spectator, probably a little closer matches would have been better." he shared.

However, the road to the ODI World Cup is not without its challenges. India has faced some fitness concerns, with key players like Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer suffering injuries during the Asia Cup. Axar is currently nursing a wrist injury and a minor tear in his left quadricep, while Iyer had to deal with back spasms and was limited to just two matches during the Asia Cup.

As India's squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, scheduled for September 22nd, is announced, fans around the world eagerly await to see how this dynamic team continues to evolve and prepare for the prestigious ODI World Cup on their home turf.
