'One Name..'- Gambhir Feels 'This' CSK Star Should've Been Picked For Asia Cup

On Monday, the BCCI selection committee named a formidable Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2023 slated to begin on August 30. While the inclusion of batting sensation Tilak Varma enthralled Indian fans, the exclusion of a few key players, including Yuzvendra Chahal, raised a few eyebrows.

Meanwhile, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels that India should've picked all-rounder Shivam Dube as Hardik Pandya's backup for the marquee event.

Speaking to Star Sports, the ex-cricketer opined that Shardul Thakur can't be an ideal backup for Pandya and therefore, the management should've considered Dube for selection, considering his red-hot recent form.

'Dube could've been an ideal backup for Pandya'- Gautam Gambhir

"One name they (the selectors) should have definitely considered is Shivam Dube because of the kind of form he is in. You need a backup for Hardik Pandya. Shardul Thakur can't be that. Shardul Thakur cannot be Hardik’s backup," said Gambhir as quoted by Sportskeeda.

However, former Indian spinner Sunil Joshi disagreed with Gambhir's opinion and spoke against Dube's selection, considering his lack of experience in ODIs.

"No, I don't think so. We have seen Shivam Dube. He would've been scoring in T20s but this is entirely format and a different tournament. With due respect to Gautam, this is my view. Shivam Dube has struggled with the ball and also in the field," Joshi said.

Dube recently received a recall into the T20I team for the Ireland series following his exploits for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2023. The swashbuckling southpaw had an impressive outing in the second T20I, ensuring a fitting finish for India through a breezy cameo. He will be in action again tonight when the Men in Blue take on the Irish in the third T20I in Malahide, Dublin.
